SARANAC LAKE--A VIEW FROM PISGAH
BY
JAMES AND PATRICIA RICHARDS
In 1838, the newly appointed Circuit Rider Sam Smith,
his wife Eliza and two pre-teen boys headed north out
of Johnsburg towards the Saranac River. Sam was sent
by the Methodist Conference to organize the Saranac Mission.
When they arrived at the River, civilization
was far behind. Fifteen families were settling within
twenty five miles. Eventually Sam and Eliza purchased
several hundred acres, built a prosperous farm and
ministered to the people surrounding the Saranac Lakes.
The story of the three generations that follow details
their trials and tribulations up to the last member's
death in 2006.
This research volume presents
the generations of the Smith family
and the early Adirondack history of
the Saranac Lakes Area.
